I recently attended the 'Australian Made One Hundred Years of Fashion' exhibition at the NGV gallery in Federation Square Melbourne. Not only did this brilliant exhibition showscase the very roots and depths of Australian fashion, but it explored the beginning of the fashion industry in Australia, showing it's growth between the years of 1850 to the 1950s. Between this period, fashion and the use of textiles became a relfection of status and prosperity within society, and this was evident throughout the exhibition- with tailors and large department stores being the main players in Australian fashion. At the turn of the 20th century however, individual fashion designers became more influential as they had the ability to sway opinion and introduce new and daring designs.
It is certainly recommended that any mad-keen fashionista go and take a sneak peak at this amazing exhibition...It did not disappoint!
